Dr. Swan in the Community—Why Dr. Swan? | Credentials
 Dr. Swan lives in the Lafayette-West Lafayette community where she practices medicine. "That's important," Swan says. "Part of doing this is being in the community. We have a wonderful practice, and our patients are the best part."
Recognizing that the success of Swan Dermatology Center stems from the community, Dr. Swan says that she and her staff make an effort to give back. In demonstration of their commitment to the health of our community, the Center supports numerous community organizations, participates in free cancer screening clinics, and in 2003 launched its own skin cancer awareness public service program called "Play It Safe in the Sun!"
"Play It Safe in the Sun!" is a program offered in conjunction with the American Academy of Dermatology. The goals are to educate children about skin cancer and to promote healthy habits in sun protection. Studies show that classroom education of elementary school children is an effective method of reducing the risk of skin cancer.
The program is a 30-minute, interactive presentation designed for children in grades 3 through 6. It is sponsored by Swan Dermatology Center, and is presented at no cost. The presentation is given by Lyn Watson. Some of the topics discussed include:
- Basic skin physiology
- Damaging effects of sun exposure
- Dangers of tanning beds
- The most common types of skin cancers
- Practical measures for protecting the skin
