Family of Injectable Gels
Restore the youthful, beautiful volume and fullness of your skin without surgery or lengthy recover times. Restylane® and Perlane® are cosmetic dermal fillers that replace the lost volume and restore youthful contours to your skin. Both products maintain their fullness using the body’s own moistures, and as their key ingredients degrade they bind to more water so that the same volume can be maintained over time, providing lasting results.
A clear gel that is administered via small injections to correct skin folds and wrinkles, Restylane® is commonly used around the mouth, between the eyebrows and around the lips. Results are dramatic, can usually be seen immediately and last six to nine months.
Composed of larger gel particles than Restylane®, Perlane® is intended for deeper injection to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.
Restylane® and Perlane® treatments are a great way to complement other skin care services we provide, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, chemical peels and microdermabrasion treatments.
Restylane® Silk is specifically designed for the skin around the mouth, and can provide a fuller, better smile by smoothing out and eliminating wrinkles and fine lines. A subtle lip enhancement, Restylane® Silk works like other products in the Restylane® family by using a safe and tested gel injection to smooth the skin.
+ Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between Perlane® and Restylane®? Both are composed of synthetic hyaluronic acid. The difference is that Perlane® has larger gel particles than Restylane® and is intended for deeper injection. Dr. Swan can help determine which one is best for you.
How long does Perlane® last? Perlane® effects generally last about six to nine months, and sometimes even longer.
Do the injections hurt? Perlane® is injected in tiny amounts using an ultrafine needle. This usually involves a mild pinching or stinging sensation that most patients can handle. Before your treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the injection area. You will also be provided with cold packs to apply before and after the treatment. With these comfort measures, the injections are very well tolerated by most patients.
What are the major side effects? Most side effects are mild and resolve within one to seven days. Mild swelling and redness can occur and last for two to three days after your treatment. Slight bruising can occur at the injection sites. Patients who are prone to cold sores around the mouth can have an outbreak as a result of the needle punctures.
What should I do prior to treatment? Perlane® requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions. Avoid using: St. John’s Wort; high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin; and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen prior to treatment.
The use of Perlane® at sites with skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts or infections should be postponed until healing is complete.
