Juvéderm™

What is Juvéderm™?
Juvéderm™ is an injectable gel dermal filler used to instantly restore the skin’s volume and fullness, effectively smoothing away wrinkles and folds that show signs of aging.

What makes Juvéderm™ so effective?
Juvéderm™ is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. There are other FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers on the market, but they are gels of a more granular texture. Juvéderm™, however, is processed using an advanced technology that yields the highest cross-linked hyaluronic acid concentration of any similar product.

This translates into a more liquid-like gel with smoother consistency that flows more easily and more evenly into the skin for a superior look, with longer-lasting results. In fact, Juvéderm™ is the first hyaluronic dermal filler that has demonstrated its safety and effectiveness in persons of color.

Compared to other dermal filler alternatives, such as collagen, Juvéderm™ has even greater benefits. While collagen is an animal-based product, Juvéderm’s™ hyaluronic acid is natural in humans. No skin allergy test is necessary prior to treatment.

What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a complex sugar naturally found in the living cells of humans and other mammals. In fact, it is one of the major structural components of the skin’s connective tissue.

Hyaluronic acid naturally retains water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1,000 times its own weight, giving it the power to hydrate the skin and increase the skin’s volume and density.

How is Juvéderm™ different from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® is not a dermal filler. Instead, it is formulated to relax muscle activity, relieving the muscle contractions that cause wrinkles, such as the dominant frown muscles that cause wrinkles between the eyebrows.

What is a Juvéderm™ treatment like?
Dr. Swan eases Juvéderm™ injectable gel into the skin using a fine needle to temporarily fill in and augment the treatment area. Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the injection, but most patients find that it is not painful at all.

The actual injection process takes only about 15 minutes, but you’ll need to allow time to consult with Dr. Swan prior to treatment.

When will I see results?
Results are obvious right away, and patients can resume their normal daily activities afterwards.

How long will the results last?
Results usually last about six to 12 months. “Touch-up” injections and repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimum results long-term.

Are there any possible side effects?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short (7 days or less). The most common side effects—which can last one to five days—include mild swelling, tenderness and redness in the treated area. Slight bruising can occur at the injection sites. Most side effects are minimal, and do not prevent patients from carrying on with their normal activities.

Laser Hair Removal

How does the LightSheer™ Diode Laser System work?
The system emits near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system's unique, patented contact-cooling handpiece, the ChillTip™, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

Why is the LightSheer™ Diode Laser System better than other methods?
The LightSheer™ Diode Laser System's design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Finally, the LightSheer™ Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

Does the LightSheer™ work on different skin types?
The LightSheer™ Diode Laser System safely and effectively treats all skin types. For darker skin types, appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, however, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer™.

What should I expect during and after treatment?
The length of a laser treatment may last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment may be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase. Side effects, if any, are minor. They may include mild temporary redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are, in fact, desired clinical results that indicate the follicle has responded to the treatment. These side effects may last from a few hours to 2-3 days, but are generally quite mild and not bothersome to most people.

The laser treatment itself can cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. But because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia can be an option.

The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of treatment and skin type. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time. Most people return to normal activity right away.

Laser Treatment of Red Faces & Red Noses

Are laser treatments safe?
Yes. Lasers have been used in medicine for a wide range of treatments since the early 1960s by many specialties. In the hands of a trained health care professional, the use of a laser is safe and effective.

How does the laser work?
A laser generates an intense beam of light. This beam brings energy to a specific site through a small handpiece connected to the laser. The laser light is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin (bright red blood cells carrying oxygen) causing decomposition or destruction by heat of unwanted cells while leaving the skin intact.

What is a vascular lesion?
A vascular lesion is formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin or result in a red appearance of the skin. Spider veins are the most common vascular lesions.

What should I expect during and after treatment?
Treatments may vary depending upon patient characteristics and the area being treated. You will be asked to wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the intense beam of laser light. A pencil-thin handpiece is used to direct a beam of laser light to the lesion. In most cases, anesthesia is not required. Some patients report feeling a slight stinging sensation during the treatment followed by some redness which usually goes away in 2-4 hours. Some swelling may also be experienced, and may last 1-2 days. There will not be any purple skin discoloration or bruised appearance to the treated skin.

Postoperative care is minimal. Your doctor may ask you to use an antibacterial ointment on the treated area for a short period of time, and will suggest that you stay out of the sun during the healing process. Final results should be evident within 10-14 days after treatment of vascular lesions. In the meantime, normal daily activities can be resumed with only a slight redness evident at the treatment area.

MicroFacials

How does microdermabrasion work?
A precise stream of very fine crystals is directed through the handpiece onto the skin to loosen the layer of dead skin cells that form on the surface. It then suctions away both the skin debris and the crystals to reveal fresh, invigorated skin. Typically, only the uppermost layer of the skin is removed. This is why there is minimal discomfort and virtually no recuperation. In select cases, however, a more aggressive abrasion may be chosen, and appropriate aftercare will be discussed.

Is microdermabrasion appropriate for everyone?
Almost everyone could benefit from microdermabrasion, but patients who are taking certain medications or who have an active inflammatory skin condition may need to postpone treatment.

What should I expect from the procedure?
Patients have been thrilled with the effect microdermabrasion has on:

  • Improving dull or uneven skin color
  • Relieving clogged pores and blackheads
  • Softening general roughness or thickened patches of dead skin
  • Refining the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and large pores
  • Removing surface debris to allow better absorption of topical medications and application of makeup

Are there any side effects?
The suctioning action may impart tautness and a slight redness to the skin, but this will subside within a few hours. Although uncommon, some patients may experience streaking of the skin from increased blood flow, which will fade gradually over a day or two.

Microdermabrasion is a valuable skin care tool in and of itself, but does not take the place of either surgical procedures or therapeutic skin care products. It is ideally used as part of a broader skin care program. The skin care specialist will tailor a home skin care regimen that will complement treatments and help achieve your desired results.
