Parisian Peel®

What is the Parisian Peel®?
The Parisian Peel® is a form of microdermabrasion previously available only in the finest European spas. Inorganic crystals as small as powdered sugar are used to effect a superficial skin polishing, similar to an extremely thorough exfoliation. Microcrystals are gently applied to the top layers of your skin through a delicate handpiece, polishing away the upper layer of dead, flaking cells. With subsequent passes, clogged pores are opened while fine lines and creases are buffed, resulting in softer, smoother, fresher-looking skin.

Unlike laser or some types of chemical treatments, you can resume your regular lifestyle with no time off for healing. The most dramatic improvements are seen with 6 to 8 treatments done about 1 or 2 weeks apart. Most importantly, the Parisian Peel® is safe. FDA-approved, the Parisian Peel® is a proven, non-surgical way to enhance your skin, regardless of your skin type or color. Even those sensitive areas like the neck and décolleté area may be treated by this method.

What are Parisian Peel® treatments like?
The skin is first gently cleansed to remove any makeup, and any areas of concern are discussed with our staff. A delicate handpiece is moved against the skin in a gentle back-and-forth motion. The vacuum force of the microcrystals can be adjusted for the more delicate regions of the eyes and neck or focused on problem acne or scarred areas. The superficial skin polishing causes very minimal discomfort. Immediately afterward, any remaining microcrystals are brushed, and the skin is re-cleansed and a soothing moisturizer is applied. Each session lasts approximately 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the areas treated.

How soon are results apparent?
Immediately after your first treatment, your skin will feel soft, fresh and smooth. Over the course of 6 to 12 treatments, the gentle buffing will unclog pores, even pigmentation, and smooth fine lines and creases. Problem or oily skin attains more clarity and acne scarring is reduced. Best of all, this gentle abrasive technique is the ideal solution for people with sensitive skin that reacts to makeup or chemicals such as Retin-A and glycolics.

What is the Parisian Peel® specifically ideal for?

  • Anyone who would like a non-invasive, non-surgical skin conditioning program.
  • Those who don't want to take time off for healing from laser treatment or certain chemical peels.
  • Active people who don't want to suspend their outdoor activities.
  • Those with sensitive skin that reacts to harsh chemicals or additives.
  • Skin damaged by electrolysis, facial irradiation, or previous therapies.
  • Heavily pigmented or freckled individuals who don't want "demarcation lines" caused by other treatments.
  • Younger people with early skin changes around the eyes and neck.
  • Men and women who want a straightforward, no-fuss skin repair program.

Perlane®

What's the difference between Perlane® and Restylane®?
Both are composed of synthetic hyaluronic acid. The difference is that Perlane® has larger gel particles than Restylane® and is intended for deeper injection. Dr. Swan can help determine which one is best for you.

How long does Perlane® last?
Perlane® effects generally last about six to nine months, and sometimes even longer.

Do the injections hurt?
Perlane® is injected in tiny amounts using an ultrafine needle. This usually involves a mild pinching or stinging sensation that most patients can handle. Before your treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the injection area. You will also be provided with cold packs to apply before and after the treatment. With these comfort measures, the injections are very well tolerated by most patients.

What are the major side effects?
Most side effects are mild and resolve within one to seven days. Mild swelling and redness can occur and last for two to three days after your treatment. Slight bruising can occur at the injection sites. Patients who are prone to cold sores around the mouth can have an outbreak as a result of the needle punctures.

What should I do prior to treatment?
Perlane® requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions. Avoid using: St. John’s Wort; high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin; and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprophen prior to treatment.

The use of Perlane® at sites with skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts or infections should be postponed until healing is complete.

Restylane®

Where can Restylane® be used?
Restylane® has been used in more than 3 million treatments in over 70 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles and to enhance the appearance of the lip border. It is currently approved in the U.S. for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, which are the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Restylane® may also be used in other areas, such as the area between the eyebrows to correct etched-in frown lines.

How long does Restylane® last?
Restylane® can be expected to last up to 6 months, and sometimes even longer.

Is Restylane® safe?
Yes. It has been in use around the world since 1996, and has an excellent safety profile. Since Restylane® is a synthetic version of a substance naturally found in our skin, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction. No allergy testing is required prior to your treatment.

Is the treatment painful?
Restylane® is injected directly into the skin with a very fine needle. Dr. Swan may choose to apply a topical numbing cream to the area prior to treating you. This helps to reduce discomfort from the injections. Most patients find the discomfort very minimal.

How long does the treatment take?
You should plan to be in the office for about 30 minutes. The treatment itself usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.

How quickly will I see the results?
The effects of Restylane® are seen immediately as the doctor is treating you.

What are the side effects?
There are very few side effects to Restylane®. Most commonly, mild swelling and redness can occur and last for 2-3 days after your treatment. Occasionally, slight bruising can occur at the injection sites. Patients who are prone to cold sores around the mouth can have an outbreak as a result of the needle punctures.

Are there any pretreatment instructions I need to be aware of?
Yes. You should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen-type products (Advil, Aleve, Motrin), St. John's Wort, and high doses of vitamin E (anything above doses contained in a multivitamin) for 7 days prior to your treatment. These products increase the risk of bleeding or bruising at the injection sites. If you develop an active cold sore near the area to be treated, you will need to reschedule your appointment to a later date, after the cold sore is completely resolved. If you are prone to these, be sure to mention it to Dr. Swan when you have your treatment.

How is Restylane® different from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Restylane® is a cosmetic filler. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a medication injected into muscles around the eyes (crow's feet), between the eyebrows, and in the forehead to relax the muscles which cause wrinkling when contracted. Many of our patients enjoy the benefits of both Restylane® and BOTOX®.

Is Restylane® the same as collagen?
Collagen is a filler derived from either cowhide or rooster combs. Therefore, there is a much higher risk of an allergic reaction. An allergy test is necessary prior to administering collagen. Restylane® is a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present in our skin. There is virtually no risk of allergy to Restylane®, so no allergy tests are needed, and no waiting is required. The effects of Restylane® have been clinically proven to last longer than traditional collagen.

Sclerotherapy

What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the treatment of unnecessary, unsightly spider veins in the legs by the injection of a "sclerosing" solution directly into those veins with a very fine needle.

What happens to those veins after they are treated with sclerotherapy?
They gradually disappear and are reabsorbed by the body over the next several months.

Is it safe to treat spider veins with sclerotherapy?
These veins are not only unsightly and sometimes painful, but are totally unnecessary since the deep circulation of the leg can easily handle all venous return from the lower extremities.

Is the sclerotherapy procedure successful?
50-90% of the veins can be eliminated during a series of sclerotherapy treatments.

Is sclerotherapy painful?
The sclerosing agents used in our office have very little burning or stinging associated with them. Most patients state that it is painless with only occasional, minimal stinging. Patients are pleasantly surprised and say that the procedure was much easier than they anticipated, and they tolerate the procedure quite well.

Are there any side effects with sclerotherapy?
Yes, but they are usually quite minor and include bruising, some brownish discoloration at sites of injection, tiny sores at sites of injection, temporary lumpiness due to coagulation of blood in larger vessels, and the development of tiny blood vessels at the injection sites. Most of these side effects resolve over time.

Do I have to limit any activity after the treatment?
We encourage walking but discourage high-impact aerobics, running or heavy weight lifting for 1-2 weeks.

How many treatments are required?
Typically, 1 to 3 treatments are required to produce the desired reduction in vein appearance. Once completed, the results are permanent and no additional treatment is required.
